Abhijit A Paul

Abhijit A Paul was born in Kolkata West Bengal in India. He completed his Graduation and Post Graduation in Visual Arts from M.S.University, Vadodara, 2008. An awardee of the Inlaks Scholarship, and he also achieved a second post-graduate diploma in Educational Technology, from IGNOU. He is a practising artist and simultaneously has been working as filmmaker for the last 10 years.

The significance of Abhijit’s works lies in the surprise he generates from making the familiar unfamiliar. The language he works with has been well understood by all who have seen examples of outdoor oils practiced and propagated in the Government Art schools all over India. The language and its semantic works best in capturing the impression of romantic environments with saturated chromatic effects. Abhijit’s choice of this language is important, because he does exactly what is not attempted anywhere, to create a vision that works against the traditional possibilities of this language. His works are marked with a sense of claustrophobia, where empty or abandoned spaces, large walls or an architectural fragment create a sense of loss and lifelessness all around. An occasional use of an animal figure adds to the tension that he builds with the strategic use of the vertical space in accordance with the horizontal. All in all, the ghostly abandonment which marks his canvases brings a sense of poignancy.

Key milestones which have been achieved:

• Film NAAD - THE SOUND has been Awarded in 52nd International Film.

• His film “AM I???” achieved the 1st prize in National Level award.

• CHHIPI - THE CAP won the Jury award of ISFFI2019 (Ministry of Science & technology)

• Currently on the Advisory Panel member of the CBFC Kolkata (Central Board of Film Certification) Govt. of India
