Ruma Nowaz

Ruma’s work is comprised of abstract, semi abstract and landscape subjects, drawn from nature, the urban environment, and her imagination. She creates subtle dreamscapes and images through the language of oil painting, allowing the viewer to immerse themselves in the paintings.
Her earlier works were influenced by journeys through China, Italy, Spain and the UK. Growing up in London, the River Thames has been integral to her life and her practice and she has painted several series of works based on the River Thames.
Her earlier work also included a series of abstract paintings based on old Indian texts such as the Rig Veda 1200 BC, The Puranas and the Upanishads The paintings exhibited are influenced by Indian Ragas, music which itself is influenced by the time of day or night and the mood of the musician.
In more recent years, the surrounding urban environment and green spaces has also shaped her work and she has produced many works on these spaces. Stillness and change through the passage of time are what she hopes to convey in these works.
Ruma was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, India and educated in London, UK. She graduated in 2006 with BA (Hons) Fine Art from Middlesex University, London.
